Sheet bend

Also: Becket bend, weaver's knot

Joins two ropes, even when they're different thicknesses.

Difficulty: Easy

  1. Sheet bend – Step 1 of 4
Step 1 of 4Bring the thin rope through a bight in the thick one from behind.
  2. Sheet bend – Step 2 of 4
Step 2 of 4Lead it around behind both parts of the bight.
  3. Sheet bend – Step 3 of 4
Step 3 of 4Tuck the end under itself.
  4. Sheet bend – Step 4 of 4
Step 4 of 4Pull all four ends tight.

Pros

  • Quick to tie, even with unequal ropes.
  • Without load usually easy to untie.

Cons

  • Can come undone without load or when it flaps.
  • Slips more easily in very smooth rope.

Holding and untying

Holds well under steady pull. Without load or when shaken it can loosen.

Suitable rope

Two ropes, even of different thickness. The bight goes in the thicker one.

Common mistake

The two short ends lie on different sides. Then it holds worse.

How to check it

Both short ends should lie on the same side of the knot.
